The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) commemorated its 77th founding anniversary on Tuesday, with residents celebrating the National Day in various forms. On the day, avenues and streets across the capital Pyongyang were decorated with national flags of the DPRK and posters. Many residents came to lay flowers at the bronze statues of late top leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il at the Mansu Hill in the city. The major department stores in Pyongyang were bustling with crowds, with many residents browsing and selecting goods from the shelves filled with a wide variety of goods. A fountain soaring dozens of meters on the Taedong River enhanced the festive atmosphere. Moreover, firework displays were held on Monday night in front of the Tower of the Juche Idea in Pyongyang and many buildings in the city were lit up with neon lights for celebration. Across the country, a wide variety of events including art performances, sports competitions and calligraphy and painting exhibitions were held to mark the grand event.
