SARASOTA, Fla. — A 17-year-old driver leaving Sarasota High School triggered a four-vehicle crash Monday afternoon after pressing the gas pedal too hard on a slick stretch of U.S. 41 at Bahia Vista, police said.

No one was seriously injured, though one person sustained minor injuries. The teen was issued a citation for careless driving, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Authorities said the crash is a reminder of the hazards that come with driving in wet weather. Rain can reduce tire grip, increase stopping distance, and make sudden movements more dangerous. Visibility is also diminished for all drivers.

Police urge motorists to take precautions during storms: slow down, apply gas and brakes gently, and remember to turn headlights on when windshield wipers are in use. Drivers are also encouraged to keep their eyes on the road and avoid distractions.

“Arriving a little late is better than not arriving at all,” the department said in a statement. “Stay safe, Sarasota — we’re here if you need us, rain or shine.”
