On January 15, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Northumberland County Communications dispatched MCFD for smoke in a structure at 147 South Spruce Street in Mt. Carmel.Chief 2 upon arrival assumed command with Chief 1 assisting and confirmed a working structure fire.A second, and then a third alarm with special calls commenced due to the balloon structure found in the town home as the fire made it to the cockloft and spread up the row.Engines 2 and 3 made an initial interior attack after hitting hydrants on the way in with additional crews from stations 1, 4, and 5. Atlas Engine 21 hit a hydrant to secure an additional water supply.Crews from T2 vented the structure and made a trench cut with the assistance from Ashland, and Shamokin ladder companies, preventing the fire from spreading to the third and fourth homes.Fire crews not only had to battle the fire but had to battle the elements as the temps dipped below zero degrees causing many frozen hoses and ladders.Number of firefighters suffered injuries due to falls on ice, and smoke inhalation thankfully all injuries were minor and all are recovering at this time.
