Tribute In Light Illuminates New York City Sky On 9/11 Anniversary
Video captured by NewYorkCityKopp shows the Tribute in Light shining over the city on September 11, honoring the victims of the 2001 attacks.
The memorial uses 88 xenon spotlights to create two powerful beams of light from Lower Manhattan, representing the Twin Towers. From certain angles, the beams appear as a single column reaching up to four miles into the sky.
Footage highlights the striking display against the city skyline, with landmarks such as the World Trade Center Transportation Hub and One World Trade Center in view. Crowds of people are seen observing and photographing the beams, capturing the solemnity of the annual tribute.
NewYorkCityKopp said: “Testing the 9/11 Tribute Lights Tonight in New York City. There are 2 Tribute Lights side by side. From this angle in Manhattan it appears as one.”
The Tribute in Light was first presented on March 11, 2002, six months after the attacks. Although initially intended as a temporary memorial, its impact led to it becoming an annual tradition.
The beams are considered the most powerful light projection in the world, visible from as far as 60 miles away on clear nights.
A dedicated crew of lighting specialists, electricians, and volunteers ensures the tribute operates flawlessly from dusk to dawn each year, preserving its powerful message of resilience and remembrance.
