The water crisis, caused by insufficient rainfall and increased evaporation due to extreme heat, has reached critical levels. According to data from the State Hydraulic Works (DSI), dramatic decreases have been observed in the region's water resources. Lake Beysehir, Türkiye’s largest freshwater resource, has experienced an 8% volumetric decrease compared to the same period last year, with its fill rate dropping to 55%. Altinapa Dam, one of the city's important drinking water sources, has seen a 25% decrease in water volume. The fill rates of other dams in the region paint a concerning picture: Apa Dam is at 1% capacity, Bozkir Dam at 6%, Bagbasi Dam at 16%, Altinapa Dam at 8%, Cavuscugol Reservoir at 14%, and Ivriz Dam at 9% capacity. Experts say the region is experiencing the driest period in recent history, not only in the Konya Closed Basin but throughout Türkiye. The precipitation between last September and April was the lowest in the last 30 years, while this summer's precipitation was the lowest in the last 35 years. The experts also say that groundwater resources, which have been a serious problem for Konya for a long time, have fallen below critical levels. The average rainfall in the region has fallen below 300 millimeters this year. Officials warn that they are approaching the 250-millimeter desertification threshold. According to expert statements and projections, an average increase of 3.5 to 7 degrees in air temperatures is expected by the end of the century. Writing by Sibel Uygun
