Wildlife camera captures herd of elephants enjoying bathing and eating
This is the awesome moment a herd of elephants were seen bathing and eating at a wildlife sanctuary in Thailand.
Footage released by Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation shows the jumbos splashing around at a salt lick in Chaiyaphum on August 24.
Forest rangers installed camera traps in the area that captured at least 10 elephants, including calves, feeding and playing in their natural habitat at the Pha Phueng Wildlife Sanctuary.
Authorities said the footage showed the success of their forest and wildlife conservation efforts.
Salt licks are natural or man-made mineral deposits where wildlife gather to ingest essential salts and nutrients. These sites support animal health, making them key spots for observation and conservation.
Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.
The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
