Muslim mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani spoke about the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk during an event in New York City.

Footage captured by activist Abby Stein shows Mamdani addressing the crowd during the Mazals Awards, where he talked about the assassination at Utah Valley University in Orem.

The occasion was organised by Jews For Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ) on September 10.

Mamdani said: 'It cannot be a question of political agreement or alignment that allows us to mourn. It must be the shared notion of humanity that binds us all.

'And that humanity, it reminds us that this news is not just that of the murder of a prominent political figure but also the news of a wife who grieves her husband, of a one-year-old and three-year-old who will grow up without a father.'

Charlie, who cofounded Turning Point USA, was killed by a suspected sniper at around 12:25 pm while he held a political discussion at a campus event in Utah.

Police detained two suspects, but they were later released. The hunt for the assassin is ongoing.

President Donald Trump said he is 'filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination' and called it a 'dark moment for America'.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Utah Department of Public Safety, has released new images of a person of interest linked to the incident.

A reward of up to $100,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in connection with the shooting.
