China: China's 3D printer market builds momentum
Storyline: China's 3D printer market builds momentum [Voice_over] China's 3D printer market is carving out a niche as cheaper prices and easier-to-use devices spur demand among private citizens and small businesses. Consumer-grade 3D printers are now about 60 percent less expensive than they were three years ago. And many devices come pre-loaded with ready-to-print models, eliminating the need for users to learn complex 3D modeling skills. In Shanghai, an architect is using a 3D printer to transform his architectural designs into physical models, which make his client presentations more effective. Since sharing his 3D-printed creations online, he's been receiving orders from cultural and tourism companies to make miniature buildings and landmarks to be sold as souvenirs. [Sound_bite] Wang Jinyu, 3D printing enthusiast: "Many architectural designs today are quite complex—featuring elements like curved staircases and intricate forms. With 3D printing, these designs can be quickly materialized into physical models. This allows us to better visualize and evaluate the design, while also giving clients a tangible representation of the project—far more effective than presenting concepts solely through drawings." [Voice_over] Falling prices for 3D printers are also giving birth to a new business model--3D printing farms, where large clusters of 3D printers work under one roof, running non-stop to produce customized products at large scale. At this printing farm in east China's Jinhua City, a toy company is using 6,000 3D printers to make toys around the clock. [Sound_bite] Hua Bin, General manager, sales department, toy company: "We currently have about 6,000 to 7,000 3D printers. That's double the number we had last year." [Voice_over] According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in the first half of this year, the amount of 3D printing equipment produced in China increased by 43 percent year on year.
