10. EDI RAMA WALKING TIRANA, ALBANIA - SEPT. 12: Niko Peleshi, a Socialist Party (PS) member of Albania’s parliament, was elected the country’s new parliament speaker on Friday, Sept. 12.
Peleshi won the support of 84 out of 140 lawmakers during the session in which MPs took their oaths and became Albania’s new parliament speaker.
After his election, Peleshi said in his speech that the parliament would be a determined ally in strengthening the rule of law and the independence of institutions during this legislative term.
Touching on his country’s European integration process, Peleshi said, that as members of this parliament, they are companions and contributors on Albania’s final stretch toward European Union (EU) membership and the excellent relations with the European Parliament and EU institutions will be further deepened.
Born on November 11, 1970, in Korce in southeastern Albania, Peleshi completed his higher education in Electronic Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Tirana.
Peleshi served as Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2013 to 2017, held the position of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2017 to 2019, and served as Minister of Defense from 2021 to 2024.
