A Chinese envoy on Friday urged an immediate ceasefire in Sudan after the United Nations (UN) Security Council unanimously renewed sanctions on the Darfur region for another year. Resolution 2791, which was adopted unanimously by the 15-member council, renews the sanctions regime, including an arms embargo and targeted measures of travel ban and asset freeze, until Sept. 12, 2026. In an explanation of the vote after the adoption of the resolution, Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, said that the ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to mounting civilian casualties and an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis. China and many other Council members have consistently and responsibly called for addressing the misalignment of the mandates of the Sudan sanctions regime and the panel of experts. China commends this resolution for resolving this issue, said Sun. Shotlist: UN Headquarters, New York City - Sept 12, 2025: 1.
