HILLSBORO, Ore. — A six-car crash ended with a garbage truck smashing into the Shute Park Library on Friday morning, leaving several people with minor injuries, police said.

Officers responded around 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 to the intersection of Southeast 10th Avenue and Southeast Maple Street. Investigators determined a driver attempted a last-second lane change, colliding with the garbage truck. The truck then veered out of control, hitting multiple vehicles before rolling into the library’s north side and breaking windows.

Three drivers and two people inside the library were treated for minor injuries. One vehicle involved, described as an early 2000s maroon Ford Focus with rear left-side damage, fled the scene before officers arrived.

The driver who caused the crash was cited for careless driving and referred to the DMV for a license retest. Police asked anyone with information about the fleeing vehicle to call non-emergency dispatch at (503) 629-0111, referencing case #25-18069.
