Hundreds of excited locals flocked to Cambodia's new airport for its opening day.

Footage shows amazed residents pouring into the halls of the newly inaugurated Techo International Airport in Kandal province on September 9.

They admired the spacious terminal with more modern equipment and architecture, including a golden Buddha statue where visitors were seen taking selfies.

The two billion USD facility, located some 20 kilometres (12 miles) outside the capital Phnom Penh, replaces the 70-year-old Phnom Penh International Airport, which only had a single runway.

The new airport is expected to have a capacity of 13 million passengers, with plans to expand to up to 50 million by 2050.

Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said: 'The opening is a major step for Cambodia's aviation and economy.'
