Tunisia: Boats depart Tunisia to join Global Sumud Flotilla heading to Gaza

The Maghreb Resilience Convoy, including a vessel named Amsterdam, set sail from Tunisian waters from Saturday evening until late Sunday en route to the besieged enclave. Three ships set sail from Gammarth Port in the capital, as two others left Sidi Bou Said Port near Tunis. A total of 16 ships set sail from Tunisian ports to join the flotilla. The initiative began last month with ships departing from Barcelona, Spain, and Genoa, Italy, before converging with North African participants in Tunisia. Organizers called it unprecedented compared to previous attempts with single vessels, which were intercepted by Israel and their passengers deported. The convoy is now the largest of its kind, aiming to reach Palestinians in Gaza, where famine conditions have taken hold under Israel’s closure of all crossings. Israel has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, leaving it uninhabitable and fueling starvation and disease. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
