Workers trapped after landslide hits mine amid floods in Indonesia
Workers were trapped after a landslide hit a mine amid floods in Indonesia.
Seven miners were stranded inside a tunnel at the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province.
CCTV footage shows the deluge of mud violently surging through the entrance, knocking out the surveillance camera on the evening of September 8.
The disaster forced the labourers to flee further inside the passageway to reach safety.
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Vice President of Corporate Communications, Katri Krisnati, said: 'The landslide has blocked access to certain areas of the mine, limiting evacuation routes for seven workers.'
Authorities confirmed that the location of the trapped workers had been identified and assured that all seven were safe. Two of them were foreign nationals - one from Chile and the other from South Africa.
As of Monday, September 15, Tri Winarno, Director General of Mineral Resources at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), said that evacuation efforts were still ongoing.
He stated that teams were continuing to clear the debris obstructing the mine shaft, but could not confirm when the rescue would be completed or provide further details on the workers' current condition.
Local media reported that at least 19 people have died due to the widespread flooding across Indonesia.
The Grasberg mine has previously been the site of fatal incidents. On May 14, 2013, a landslide killed 28 of 34 workers who were trapped underground. Two weeks later, another worker died after being struck by falling debris.
