Qatar: Gulf Cooperation Council pushes for joint defense measures to deter future attacks from Israel
Storyline: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Monday called for joint defense measures to deter Israel from further attacks, following an emergency summit in Qatar where leaders of all Islamic countries strongly condemned last week's Israeli attack on the Qatari capital Doha. Leaders from 57 Arab and Muslim nations gathered in Doha to express their solidarity with Qatar. They called on member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to reconsider their diplomatic and economic ties with Israel. They described Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing," warning the international community of grave consequences if these actions are not deterred. The GCC, comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, pledged a collective defense effort based on a defense pact formed in 2000 to address member states' security concerns. "The leaders confirmed that GCC security is undivided, any attack on a member state is an attack on all. All capabilities of member states will be dedicated to supporting Qatar and protecting its security and sovereignty. The leaders have directed the joint defense council and the supreme military committee to hold an urgent meeting in Doha," said Jassim al-Budaiwi, GCC secretary-general, at a press conference after the emergency Arab-Islamic summit. The emergency summit was organized as fury swept the region following Israel's unprecedented airstrike on Doha on Sept 9, which killed five members of Hamas and a Qatari security officer. "It shows Qatar's diplomatic weight globally. But also because of the gravity of the situation, what happened last Tuesday, it was an attack on the international system as a whole. These nations are standing up with Qatar to show solidarity," said Rashid Al-Mohanadi, a nonresident fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, an independent, non-profit policy research institution based in Doha. While Muslim leaders were speaking, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewed his threats to target Hamas leaders "wherever they are." Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio surprisingly announced a visit to Qatar in hopes of containing further tensions with Israel. Shotlist: Doha, Qatar - Sept 14, 2025: 1.
