RELATIVES OF PATIENTS WAITING IN HOSPITAL CORRIDORSGAZA, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 16: Due to Israel’s genocidal policy of starvation in Gaza, hospitals are filled with emaciated children, reduced to skin and bone, struggling between life and death as a result of malnutrition. The number of those who have died from hunger continues to rise. According to the latest figures from Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 428 people have died from malnutrition and hunger, including 146 children. The Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis is overflowing with children suffering from malnutrition, as well as illnesses that cannot be properly diagnosed or treated due to lack of medical resources. Some of these children lack not only food but also a bed to sleep in, waiting desperately for a helping hand. According to figures from the Gaza government’s media office, 650,000 children in Gaza are at risk of death due to malnutrition, hunger, and food shortages. Among the children receiving treatment at the Nasser Hospital are seven-year-old Kasem Zannoun and four-year-old Arjwan al-Duheini, both of whom are at risk of dying. Kasem’s mother, Hanan Zannoun, said her son suffers from protein deficiency and Hartnup disease—a condition that disrupts protein transport in the intestines and kidneys—and that he is constantly experiencing diarrhea and vomiting. Her son urgently needs protein-rich food, she said: “There isn’t even food for healthy people in Gaza. How can those who are malnourished find anything to eat?” The worried mother added: “I don’t want to lose my son too. There aren’t even hospital beds. He has to lie on the floor.” Arjwan’s mother, Hanin Abu Udwan al-Duheini, said her daughter suffers from malnutrition, has kidney problems, and lacks protein and potassium. “Arjwan is four years old but cannot walk, cannot speak, and shows no development at all. She weighs only five kilograms,” the mother said. Expressing her frustration to the world, she asked: “Are you waiting for all the children in Gaza to die?” Dr. Ahmed al-Farra, head of the Pediatrics Department at the Nasser Hospital, said deaths from hunger have multiplied in August and September. “In August, deaths from hunger and malnutrition skyrocketed. In September, we expect to see at least as many deaths as in August, if not more.” Speaking about the aid that manages to enter Gaza, Dr. al-Farra said the supplies are both insufficient in quantity and poor in nutritional value. “The aid entering Gaza meets only about 10 percent of the need. For example, 50 aid trucks enter daily, but Gaza requires 600 trucks per day. Secondly, the distribution is neither fair nor reaching those in real need. And thirdly, the items allowed in are not based on people’s needs but on Israel’s discretion. Nutrient-rich items such as milk and dairy products are simply not allowed in.” According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, more than 3,600 buildings and towers in Gaza City have been completely or severely damaged since the assault began, along with 13,000 tents that had sheltered displaced families. Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed almost 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and triggered widespread starvation and disease.
