China: China makes breakthrough in grain output in 2021-2025 period
Storyline: China makes breakthrough in grain output in 2021-2025 period [Voice_over] China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs says food security was well protected during the 14th Five-Year Plan. In 2024, grain output topped 1.4 trillion jin, or 700 million metric tons, for the first time. [Sound_bite] Han Jun, Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs: "Per capita grain supply has reached 500 kilograms. China has secured basic self-sufficiency in grain and full security in staple food. National food security is well guaranteed." [Voice_over] Breakthroughs in key technologies boosted China's homegrown seed development to meet urgent production needs and shifting market demand. Last year, soybean output reached over 20.6 million tons. The self-sufficiency rate rose 4 percentage points from 2020. [Sound_bite] Zhang Xingwang, Chinese Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs: "Over 95 percent of crops now grow from domestic varieties. That means Chinese grain mainly relies on Chinese seeds. Homegrown breeds like white-feather broilers, Huaxi cattle, and Pacific white shrimp have broken foreign monopolies. Their market share keeps rising." [Voice_over] A more diverse food supply is enriching Chinese dining tables. The country's meat consumption reached 72 kilograms per capita, while egg consumption reached 25 kilograms. Both are above the world average. [Stand_up] Sun Tianyuan, Reporter: "Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan, officials say they aim to further boost farm efficiency, and raise farmers' incomes. They also pledge to achieve basic agricultural modernization by 2035, with rural areas enjoying modern living conditions." [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
