Storyline: Some 26,000 children in Gaza currently require treatment for acute malnutrition, with more than 10,000 in Gaza City alone, said Tess Ingram, spokeswoman of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), on Tuesday. Child malnutrition in the enclave is "spiraling", said Ingram. Famine was confirmed late last month in Gaza City by UN-backed food insecurity experts. As bombs continue to fall on Gaza City as part of Israel's intensifying military operation, families with starving children are being pushed southwards from one "hellscape" to another, Ingram said. Speaking from the south of the enclave, Ingram described the forced mass displacement of families as a "deadly threat for the most vulnerable." It is inhumane to expect nearly half a million children battered and traumatized by over 700 days of unrelenting conflict to flee one hellscape to end up in another, she said. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over the past few days, its partners monitoring the movement of people in Gaza counted almost 70,000 displacements heading south, and about 150,000 over the past month. The only available route, Al Rashid Road, was "very busy" when Ingram was there on Monday, she said. They are being pushed to "a so-called humanitarian zone" encompassing Al-Mawasi and surrounding areas, Ingram said, describing their destination as "a sea of makeshift tents, human despair" and services there insufficient to support the hundreds of thousands already living there. Israeli forces dropped leaflets, urging people in Gaza City to move toward overcrowded "humanitarian zones" in central and southern Gaza. They said that Gaza City has become "a dangerous combat zone" and that they are determined to defeat Hamas there. While promoting southern Gaza as a safe zone for fleeing Palestinians, Israel has been implementing air strikes and bombardments on the areas, causing heavy casualties. The Gaza media office said in a statement on Tuesday that around 800,000 Gazans had gathered in southern Gaza Strip's Al-Mawasi area, where more than 2,000 people had been killed in more than 109 attacks by Israel, who designated the area as a "humanitarian zone."
