Newport Beach, United States - September 17, 2025 credit: PacificOffshore/PlanetWhale Pacific Offshore’s whale-watching crew spotted two enormous sperm whales after receiving a tip from fellow captains at Dana Wharf Whale Watching. Each whale measured around 60 feet long and weighed up to 9,000 pounds. The crew set out from Newport Beach and scanned the open water for signs of the animals. They also used a hydrophone to listen for the whales’ unique clicking sounds, called codas, to help track them. Their search was successful yesterday when the pair appeared offshore. The crew was able to observe the whales for more than five hours, staying with them until the sun began to set. Sperm whales stand out with their angled blowhole and wrinkled appearance. They can dive for over 90 minutes, reaching depths of more than 4,000 feet in pursuit of giant squid. While they sometimes pass by Newport Beach, sightings are rare and unpredictable. Witnessing two of them together in the same area is considered extraordinary.
