China: Smart robots serve nursing homes in China
Storyline: Smart robots serve nursing homes in China [Voice_over] Nursing home facilities and elderly care centers in China’s tech hub Shenzhen are using robots to assist residents in everything from dance classes to moxibustion sessions. This health monitoring robot shuttles between patients, taking their daily blood pressure. Meanwhile, another robot leads a dance class in the center’s entertainment room. Residents say they enjoy the interaction. [Sound_bite] Tang Yuzhen, resident, nursing home: "I'm 89 years old. Just now, a robot taught us a dance. It's very slow, perfect for us elderly people to follow." [Voice_over] At another nursing home in Shenzhen, intelligent robots are everywhere. Some, patrol the facility; others, like this shampooing robot, can wash a person’s hair while they recline. Or this robotic arm that performs moxibustion, the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique of applying heat to various points on your body. [Sound_bite] Dong Yuqin, resident, nursing home: "I’ve tried manual moxibustion before. It was smoky and felt like being grilled. But this (robot-assisted) moxibustion is fully automated. The ash disposal is automatic, and the heating is too. There’s no smoke. It’s automatically vented out." [Voice_over] In June of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology together with the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced plans to increase even further the use elderly care service robots in community centers and nursing homes.
