A rescue sheep has learned to walk again - thanks to a special wheelchair.

Dave, a six‑year‑old ram at Albert's Horse Sanctuary in Barnsley, was rescued from slaughter as a lamb along with three companions, Summer, Princess and Derek.

But earlier this year he was found cast – a condition where a sheep falls onto its back and cannot right itself, often fatal within hours.

He spent months spent unable to stand, and for weeks sanctuary volunteers lifted him daily, nursed pressure sores and ensured he never gave up the fight.

Their efforts were given a crucial boost when Winston's Wheels, a mobility charity, donated a custom wheelchair to help Dave regain strength.

The turning point came this week, when Dave surprised his carers by managing to stand unaided and even take a few steps.

"His journey is inspiring everyone who meets him," said a spokesperson for the sanctuary, which is battling to cover rising costs for feed, bedding and veterinary care as donations fall."

The sanctuary is appealing for public support to help continue its work.
