Abuja, Nigeria - September 17, 2025 The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the environment and protecting the ozone layer to promote a cleaner environment and combat climate change. The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Lawal, made this declaration at the 40th Anniversary of the Vienna Convention and 2025 Ozone Day celebration held on Wednesday in Abuja. "Scientific evidence today shows that the ozone layer is nearing recovery, and we are optimistic that by 2066 it will be fully restored to its original state. Nigeria signed the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in 1988 and has since met key phase-out targets, including the elimination of CFCs and other harmful substances. We have also ratified the Kigali Amendment and will soon begin implementing its provisions." The Minister further said protecting the ozone layer is not the sole responsibility of government or international organizations like the UNDP but belongs to everyone on Earth. "The ozone layer is unique; we have only one environment with no alternative place to live—no moon or other planets to retreat to. Therefore, we must continue to work diligently to ensure the Earth's safety. I urge our royal fathers to convey this message to all Traditional Rulers across the country." Also speaking, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mrs Elsie Attafuah, highlighted that the day not only celebrates global achievements but serves as a reminder of the power of international cooperation. "The theme of this celebration resonates with nations worldwide to protect the planet while advancing human development. "It underscores the importance of both national and global commitments to save the ozone layer and recognizes the critical role this progress plays in slowing global warming." "UNDP’s partnership with Nigeria is guided by three strategic pillars: progress through partnership, climate-health synergy, and innovation for a greener future," Attafuah added. The National Ozone Officer in the Ministry of Environment, Mr Idris Abdullahi, noted that the theme of the event highlighted the role of science in implementing the Montreal Protocol’s phase-out programs. The theme of the event is"From Science to Global Action," and was organized by the Ministry of Environment with support from UNDP, UNIDO, and other partners.
