China: China unveils plan to stabilize growth of light industry
Storyline: China on Friday unveiled a plan to stabilize the growth of its light industry, outlining the development goals and the roadmap for the sector from 2025 to 2026. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Ministry of Commerce, and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued the plan which provides concrete action guidelines to stabilize growth, boost consumption, and benefit people's livelihoods. The plan proposes that from 2025 to 2026, the light industry should achieve several goals including steadily increasing the scale of key industries while maintaining stable enterprise operations; rapidly growing emerging sectors such as smart home appliances, elderly care products, and infant and child goods; launching 300 upgraded and innovative products; and cultivating ten more specialized industrial clusters with a scale exceeding 100 billion yuan (more than 14 million U.S. dollars). Focusing on the five key tasks of strengthening supply, boosting consumption, stabilizing exports, optimizing the industrial ecosystem, and enhancing growth momentum, the plan will drive the light industry sector toward improvement in both quality and quantity. He Yaqiong, head of the Consumer Goods Industry Department of the MIIT, said the plan will help China realize its industrial growth target. "The light industry sector serves as the bedrock of our people's livelihoods, connecting thousands of enterprises and jobs on one end and the daily lives of millions of households on the other. The plan focuses on sustained efforts at both the supply and demand ends, stabilizing our traditional competitive industries while cultivating new growth engines. By leveraging the certainty of high-quality development in light industry, we will navigate the uncertainties of the domestic and international environment and help China's industrial economy achieve this year's target of 5-percent growth," he said.
