South Sudan: Refugees in South Sudan living in deteriorating conditions
Refugees in South Sudan are facing deteriorating living conditions at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps due to shortage of supplies and years of escalating conflicts in the country. This is a story featured in the China Global Television Network's (CGTN) special documentary series "Blue Helmets, No Borders", which premiered on Tuesday, spotlighting the humanitarian work undertaken by the Chinese peacekeepers deployed overseas. In South Sudan's capital Juba, thousands are seeking shelter in IDP Camp-1. Jacob Gatuak Kuol, chairman of the camp, talked in detail about the dire conditions in the camp. "In IDP Camp-1, we have more than 17,000 population. They are living here since 2013. [In] Addition, [there are] 1,000 new arrivals because of the escalating tension in March. They are living in condition without food. Even they came now, there are no space for them to make a shelter. They just stay together with their relatives," he said. He said things are getting worse in the rainy season as diseases may spread quickly since every tent is packed with too many people. "The shelters are leaking because more than three years now, they didn't receive the plastic sheet for the shelter like that. For example, when we see one shelter, ten people or seven people may live in one shelter," he said. The chairman also expressed concern about limited food shared among the refugees. "Yes, this is the very challenge. The shelters are leaking because more than three years now, they didn't receive the plastic sheet for the shelter like that." (Reporter: Can you show me one shelter?) "Yes, for example, when we see one shelter, ten people or seven people may live in one shelter. She says 'We are living with other four people.'" (Reporter: how many kids do they have?) "She says that 'I have three.' All the relatives who are coming from the condition, they live together." (Reporter: The relatives are newly arrived. And then, this is already a very small house.) "Yes, a small house, but because they don't know where to come. When they come, they are accommodated with the relatives. They stay with this lady together." (Reporter: That means they need to share very little food they have to share with others.); [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 4.
