More than 650,000 civilians have chosen to stay in Gaza City amid relentless Israeli bombardment and the collapse of basic supplies, facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and a painful dilemma between leaving or confronting death in their homes. Inside hospitals, medical staff have refused to abandon their posts, holding firmly to their duty toward patients. "Remaining at Al-Shifa Hospital is a humanitarian duty we will fulfill until our last breath here in northern Gaza. Our duty compels us to stay and treat the sick and wounded. Without us, no surgeries or critical interventions can take place," said Amin Awad, anesthesiologist with Al-Shifa Hospital. Many Gazans who had been displaced multiple times returned to the city and chose to face their fate. They realized that moving south brings no less suffering or danger, as nowhere in Gaza is truly safe. "We fled from Shuja'iyya and stayed here in the Al-Samer neighborhood. I once went south, but it was unbearable with the heat and suffering. Now I've come back, hoping we can be safe here. Today I lost my nephew, and my sister is wounded and in a coma," said Umm Youssef, a displaced Palestinian. Religious leaders and local aid groups have also chosen to stay. They have been providing care for displaced families in churches and mosques. The last remaining civilian lifelines are collapsing in Gaza City as Israel's military onslaught triggers more casualties, mass displacement, destruction, and tighter restrictions on humanitarian work, UN humanitarians said on Thursday. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that its partners tracking the movement of people reported that the number of displacements within the Gaza Strip is rising fast, now exceeding 1 million since the ceasefire collapsed in mid-March. As of Wednesday, 200,000 displacements were recorded from northern to southern Gaza over the past month. The video shows: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Sept 15, 2025 (CGTN - No access Chinese mainland) 1.
