Tide Trap! Walkers Rescued from Barred Beach at Whipsiderry Cove, Cornwall, UK
This stunning but risky walk from Watergate Bay to Porth highlights the importance of checking tide times AND access restrictions. A group learns this the hard way when they find the Whipsiderry steps blocked. Coastguard to the rescue!
The two mile scenic walk along the beach from Watergate Bay to Porth near Newquay is only to be contemplated by those with a keen eye for the state of the tides. The route is between sheer cliffs and the ocean. The only route from the beach when the tide rises and cuts off the Porth beach is up the precipitous cliff stairway at Whipsiderry Beach. Soon after developers started cliff stabilisation work at the base of the Whipsiderry cliffs, a series of huge cliff collapses have taken place. With increasing concern for public safety, access to the steps and the beach is now deemed unsafe. To this effect, fencing and a padlocked gate have been fitted by the local authority. The walking group planned their walk mindful of the tides, but were not aware that their planned terminus would be blocked. Signage on the Whipsiderry gate indicates that those in need should call the Coast Guard, fortunately, after a period of time, a member of HM Coastguard attended, with a key to release our grateful group.
