The opening ceremony, titled “Essays on Happiness,” brought together national and international artists in a celebration featuring a light and mapping show with images referencing Colombia’s indigenous communities, along with live musical performances. At the center of the plaza, 8-meter-tall sculptures by artist Amaranta Almaraz were unveiled, inspired by Bachue, a deity of Colombia’s Muisca indigenous people, and Chalchiuhtlicue, an Aztec deity from Mexico. The Biennial will showcase the work of more than 250 artists from 12 countries, including monumental installations, murals, performances and exhibitions across 20 venues in the capital. All activities are open to the public free of charge.
