Truck's wheel dislodges and smashes shopfront in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a shop was damaged by a runaway truck wheel in Thailand.
The Isuzu 22-wheeler was coasting along a busy highway when the rubber tyre was dislodged.
CCTV footage shows the ghost wheel hurtling across the pavement before crashing into an auto repair shop in Chonburi, on September 17.
The object then bounced off into a nearby security company, shattering a glass wall.
The Mueang Chonburi Police Station said there were no injuries reported from the incident that happened at 11:30 am local time .
Repair shop owner Chunhua Saetung, 77, said: 'I saw the tyre fly off the truck and crash into the shop, damaging our equipment. Then it struck the company's wall, breaking it. I was so shocked. I've never seen anything like that happen before.'
Company security guard Siriwan Jaikla, 27, said she heard a loud bang before seeing the wheel crash into the office.
She added: 'Fortunately, no one was sitting on the lobby sofa at the time or they would have been seriously injured. Drivers should always check their vehicles before setting off.'
The truck driver, identified by police as Chuchai Mala-ongphet, 50, said he had no idea about the runaway wheel until a motorist driving behind him alerted him.
He added: 'I didn't realise the tyre had come off until a car following me told me to inspect the damage. I have notified my insurance company and filed a claim.'
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
