China: Camel industry fuels rural prosperity in Xinjiang
Storyline: Camel industry fuels rural prosperity in Xinjiang [Voice_over] In Keping of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, raising camels has blossomed into a thriving industry providing jobs and income for locals. In 2024, Keping's camel-based economy, which includes milk processing, camel hair production, and tourism, contributed 280 million U.S. dollars to the local economy and created more than 6,000 new jobs. To help grow the industry, villagers receive subsidies to purchase camels and build livestock houses, as well as technical training courses to learn how to improve camel milk yields. And new jobs, like quality control inspector at a local camel milk factory, have been improving individual incomes. [Sound_bite] Gulimiremu Dawuti, Camel milk factory employee: "The factory is close to home, the salary is great, and I'm really interested in the industry." [Voice_over] Once a national-level poverty-stricken region of the country, Keping's economic success from the camel industry is partly due to a shift in business models. Previously, villagers raised camels solely as livestock to sell. In building up the scale of the industry, today, things like camel milk are now profitable. [Sound_bite] Chang Cheng'en, member, Standing Committee, Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee in Keping County: "We've brought in camel milk processing enterprises and shifted from scattered small-scale herding to more industrialized, intensive and scientific farming. We've also introduced eight support policies to boost farmers' enthusiasm." [Voice_over] Keping has a population of 60,000 people, and 56,000 camels, roughly one per person.
