The U.S. Department of Education ruled that the grants, which tied eligibility to race and ethnicity, violate constitutional standards. The decision affects academic support programs, career training and student services across the university system.

University leaders said the loss amounts to at least $2.9 million, with rural campuses expected to be hardest hit. Roughly 20% of students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks identify as Alaska Native.

Alaska lawmakers have urged the administration to restore the funding, warning of long-term harm to Indigenous students and communities.
