Heavy overnight rainfall brought Kolkata to a standstill on Tuesday, just days before Durga Puja celebrations are set to begin. Streets turned into rivers, homes and markets were flooded, and daily life was thrown into chaos.

The India Meteorological Department reported 185 mm of rain within just three hours — the heaviest in years — with Alipore recording 247.5 mm in 24 hours. Several low-lying areas across the city were submerged, and waterlogging was reported in key localities.

Tragically, at least seven people died due to electrocution in separate incidents linked to the flooding, highlighting serious infrastructure and safety lapses.

Transport was hit hard. Train services were rescheduled or cancelled, Metro operations were delayed, and traffic came to a halt in multiple parts of the city.

The timing of the deluge has also dampened Durga Puja preparations, with pandals, decorations, and markets all affected. Emergency teams have been deployed to pump out water and restore basic services as the city struggles to recover from the havoc.
