Families fleeing bombardments and ground assaults set up tents in Beit Darras Cemetery in Khan Younis. Among them is Khaled al-Dali, who arrived with his family after leaving Shati Refugee Camp.

“Claims of safe zones are meaningless. Israel enjoys tormenting people. We will live among the dead in the cemetery because this is the only place we found for our family,” he told Anadolu.

His son Yusuf said the family walked a long distance before reaching the cemetery.
“We will stay by the graves. They may even bury the dead next to our tent,” he said.

Muna Abu Layla, another displaced resident, described moving from place to place as attacks hit residential buildings and even tents. She said they arrived at the cemetery without mattresses or blankets.

Elderly and bedridden Walid Hassan also ended up at the site. “Displacement is very difficult. Our home is gone, nothing is left for us on this land,” he said.

The Israeli army has been conducting a ground offensive in Gaza City since Aug. 11 under an operation it later named “Gideon’s Chariots 2.” The campaign has included demolishing homes with booby-trapped robots, artillery bombardment, indiscriminate fire, forced displacement and large-scale incursions.

On Aug. 8, the Israeli government approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan for a gradual reoccupation of the entire Gaza Strip, starting with Gaza City, home to nearly 1 million Palestinians.

UN investigators recently concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, where more than 65,300 people have been killed since October 2023.
