RAMALLAH, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 23: Palestinians have welcomed the recent recognition of the State of Palestine by several Western nations but stressed that these diplomatic steps must lead to tangible change on the ground, including an end to the war in Gaza.

Residents in Ramallah staged a demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, in reaction to international recognition of a Palestinian state by several Western nations. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, participants stressed that these diplomatic steps must lead to tangible change on the ground, including an end to the war in Gaza.

The moves by countries including Britain, Canada, France, and Belgium bring the number of UN member states recognizing Palestine to 159.

Residents told Anadolu that while the recognition is a positive result of the Palestinian people's long struggle, it is long overdue. They emphasized that the international community must now translate this diplomatic support into practical measures that pressure Israel and lead to the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The recognition by Britain, as the author of the Balfour Declaration, was noted as being of particular symbolic importance.

Fayza Abu Al-Hayja', a member of the Palestinian Women’s Union, stated that while the recognition is significant, the immediate priority is stopping the war in Gaza and what she described as Israeli policies of killing and settlement in the West Bank.

These recognitions follow a recent international conference on the two-state solution. They coincide with the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in heavy casualties, escalating violence and arrests in the occupied West Bank.
