World leaders and civil society organizations gathered on Monday at the United Nations headquarters to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women where the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was first published. Addressing the high-level meeting, Annalena Baerbock, president of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, said that the Beijing Declaration was "a watershed achievement advancing women's rights, resources, and representation." Huang Xiaowei, deputy head of the National Working Committee on Children and Women of State Council of China, highlighted China's progress in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment at the meeting. As government officials and representatives reflected on the achievements and setbacks in advancing women's rights over the past 30 years, they agreed that poverty, conflict, climate shocks and technical skills gaps risk eroding hard-won gains. Some leaders expressed their concern over a growing backlash against women's rights across the world. Representatives attending the meeting called for decisive leadership and for accelerating the implementation of the Beijing Declaration.
