Nuru is a twelve-year-old male lowland gorilla. I have known him since he was born. When he was little and my friend and I would visit them, we would show him and his older brother a mirror. The boys really liked it and they would look at each other. Today we met again at the boys' place and I said to my friend, "Hey, you don't have that mirror with you." And she said, "Sure, I always carry it." So we showed it to Nuru again. To our surprise, the reaction was immediate. Nuru first looked at himself from a distance, then he picked up a twig and leaned forward to get a better look at himself. He looked at himself for a long time, how beautiful he was, and we were very amused when he started to look at his teeth, which he did several times in a row. Yes, our Nuru always liked mirrors. And as you can see, nothing has changed over the years.
