China: Water diversion projects revive dry lake once known as "sea of death" in Xinjiang
Storyline: Water diversion projects revive dry lake once known as "sea of death" in Xinjiang [Voice_over] A years long project to revive the Taitema Lake in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been realized with a healthy return of flora and fauna. In the early 1970's, the lake dried up because of excessive agricultural irrigation along the lower parts of the river that feeds it, the Tarim. But several years ago, various water conservation projects were launched which have turned the dry lake into an oasis where herders bring their flocks. [Sound_bite] Rizwangul Turdi, local herder: "There is much water and grass, so we have many goats." [Sound_bite] Memet Tursun, local herder: "There are many wild animals, flying and walking everywhere." [Voice_over] Part of the lake revival included rerouting water from the upper reaches of the Tarim. The head of a reservoir management station says once plants are watered, it's only a matter of time until they start showing signs of life. [Sound_bite] Zhang Yu, head, reservoir management station: "The tree can revive. Once it is watered, it will come back very quickly." [Voice_over] More than 170 kinds of wild animals have returned to the region, including jerboa and red deer. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
