VARIOUS OF RESIDENTS DRIVING THEIR MOTORCYCLEJIANGMEN, CHINA - SEP. 25: On Thursday, Sep. 25, residents of Jiangmen in China’s Guangdong province returned to their daily life after Typhoon Ragasa swept through the region. The super typhoon, the first of the year in the Pacific, brought strong winds and heavy rains earlier this week before moving inland. Crowds carrying umbrellas, people boarding boats, and scenes of local streets reflected the city’s gradual return to normalcy. Chinese authorities relocated more than one million people across Guangdong as the province raised its typhoon emergency response to the highest level ahead of Ragasa’s landfall on Wednesday. State media reported that over 80,000 fishing boats were secured in ports, while nearly 12,300 offshore workers were brought ashore. Schools, businesses, and transport were suspended in more than 10 cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Dongguan. Authorities deployed hundreds of rescue teams, while the China National Offshore Oil Corporation evacuated more than 5,000 employees from South China Sea platforms. The storm, packing winds of up to 55 meters per second or 123 miles per hour , also battered Hong Kong, where flooding damaged hotels and disrupted air travel, grounding about 1,000 flights. In Taiwan, officials said the death toll from the super typhoon rose to 17, with several people still missing after floods triggered by the storm.
