China: Adoption of AI tech across electronics sector sees demand for latest gadgets surge
As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes more prevalent, a wave of new consumer electronics items are rapidly incorporating AI features, signaling the deepening impact of AI across the entire industrial chain as consumer demand for the latest AI-equipped products rises. The thirst for these cutting-edge gadgets can be seen at the bustling Huaqiangbei, one of the world's largest electronics markets located in the southern Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen. Here, numerous AI digital products such as translation devices, advanced AI glasses, smart mouses, and electronic toys, are all creating a buzz among customers. "With the AI mouse, users can directly voice their needs, allowing the device to create the desired presentation, drawing, or even write out an article. Last year, there were only about two to three AI products available, while this year, almost all devices now feature AI capabilities. Even hair dryers now come with AI functions, indicating a gradual shift towards AI as the main focus," said a merchant at the market. The integration of large AI models in traditional electronics products has also proved something of a gamechanger, offering increased functionality which appeals to buyers. A set of AI-powered smart wireless earphones, which were launched in early August, have proven particularly popular, with hundreds of units now being sold daily at one store in the Huaqiangbei market, giving business operators here a huge boost in their overall revenue. "This year, compared to the same period last year, our sales have increased by over 188 percent, all attributed to AI learning machines," said another merchant. While the sector is enjoying something of a boom time as consumers embrace the new tech-savvy, AI-driven trend, industry experts believe that finding a second growth curve has become an urgent priority for technology companies within the consumer electronics industrial chain. "The demand for various downstream electronic components is clear to see here. We can observe that both major overseas companies and domestic industries are fully embracing AI. Our company is no exception, with the scale of cooperation with clients in areas such as server ODMs (original design manufacturers), high-performance computing, data center power supply, and optical module continuously growing. In the first half of the year, some of the incremental growth has already exceeded 100 percent year-on-year," said Wang Ying, secretary to the president of the Shenzhen Huaqiang Industrial company.
