Missing British tourist, 23, who ignored red flag is found dead in sea in Bali
A British tourist who was swept away by a rip current has been found dead off the coast of Bali today.
Harrison Edward Nada Kontounas, 23, was missing for two days before he was found floating lifeless two miles off Kuta Beach in Badung Regency at 12:30 pm local time.
Footage shows joint rescue crews combing the sea on the third day of the search before the Brit, from Ilford, East London, turned up in the choppy waters.
He was found with the same orange pants he had been wearing on the day of his disappearance.
Nyoman Sidakarya, head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, said: 'The British national was found at 12:30 pm by our joint SAR team, using a jet ski operated by Lifeguard Bali for the evacuation.'
Harrison's body was taken to Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital, where family members confirmed his identity.
The holidaymaker had ignored red warning flags to go swimming with two friends at Legian Beach on Wednesday afternoon, but he was struck by a large wave that dragged him out to sea.
Rescue teams immediately scoured the coastline. Thermal drones and helicopters joined the search on Thursday afternoon but the missing Brit was only discovered today.
The Denpasar Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas) said wind speeds of up to 39 kph had been blowing through the beach at the time Harrison was dragged out to sea.
Harrison's close friend Clayton Lyon wrote: 'It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that Harrison Nada-Kantounas, 23, has been found two miles offshore from Kuta Beach, Bali. He was taken by a rip current on Wednesday afternoon.
'We want to thank everyone who searched, donated, and shared his story. His friends never stopped, walking the beaches all night and even funding a helicopter when no official air support came. The GoFundMe has now raised over £27,000, which has supported the search and will now help us bring Harrison home and give him the farewell he deserves.
'Any remaining funds will be donated to charity in his memory.
'Harrison was gentle, kind, funny, and full of life. His warmth and loyalty touched everyone who knew him. He leaves us far too soon, but he will never be forgotten.'
Harrison's family and friends have slammed local authorities for their alleged lack of urgent action, as relatives called for a full investigation into the alleged negligence.
Harrison was a management trainee at London-based construction company Arc Group. He was with two friends who made it out of the sea when he disappeared off the tropical Indonesian island.
Legian Beach is located next to Kuta Beach, which is notorious for its strong rip currents and powerful waves that have led to numerous drowning incidents over the years, usually involving tourists and inexperienced swimmers.
Lifeguards patrol the area and put up warning flags but accidents still occur during the high tide or when beachgoers swim outside designated safe zones.
