Multiple Israeli airstrikes on Yemen's Houthi-held capital, Sanaa, caused heavy civilian casualties on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring more than 170, according to Houthi-run health authorities. The Israeli military stated that its targets included Houthi militants and military camps. However, the Ministry of Defense in Sanaa denied that any military sites were struck, saying that only civilian facilities were hit. Sanaa suffered the heaviest bombing in weeks on Thursday evening, as 20 Israeli warplanes launched simultaneous airstrikes, dropping around 65 bombs on areas in the south, southeast, and north of the city. The strikes hit a correctional facility linked to security and intelligence, a power station, and several residential neighborhoods, causing widespread destruction to many homes. Medical teams in Sanaa have received about 183 victims, including the dead and wounded. Israel has been conducting airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since 2024, in retaliation for Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory. The Houthis say their assaults are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Their attacks intensified after Israel killed senior Houthi government officials in Sanaa in August.
