PROTESTERS PERFORMING MUSICNEW YORK CITY, US - SEPT. 26: Hundreds of protesters gathered in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on Friday, Sept. 26, chanting and holding signs to denounce Israel’s military offensive in Gaza as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly. The demonstration coincided with a walkout by numerous country delegations inside the UN hall as Netanyahu began his speech. Organizers said the rally aimed to draw attention to the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave. In his speech to the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu claimed that Israel “deterred Iran's Shiite militias in Iraq; they're still deterred, and their leaders, if they attack Israel, will also be gone.” He gave no further details. Netanyahu spoke to a largely empty hall after many delegations walked out in protest of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, now nearing its third year. At least 65,549 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Friday. The Israeli army resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 12,939 people and injured 55,335 others, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
