A rally for an Indian politician ended in chaos, leaving at least 40 people dead and dozens injured.

The campaign by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) went out of control when a sudden crowd surge caused a stampede-like crush in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday evening, September 27.

Health Secretary Senthil Kumar confirmed that at least 17 women, 14 men, four boys and five girls died, while 93 others were injured.

Vijay said: 'My heart is broken. I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.

'I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for a speedy recovery for those who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.'

The actor also pledged compensation of 22,500 USD to the families of each victim and 2,200 USD to those injured, which is twice the amount offered by the government.

Footage shows emergency responders carrying victims into ambulances, with volunteers assisting in bringing the wounded to the hospital.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with children separated from their families, people fainting in the dense crowd, and ambulances struggling to reach victims amid traffic congestion.

Locals quickly formed human chains to clear pathways for emergency vehicles.

The district administration called the event a 'stampede-like situation' and ordered a magisterial inquiry.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held an emergency meeting and later announced the appointment of retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan to lead a judicial commission investigating the disaster.
