US: Trump signals possible action on land-based Venezuelan drug cartels
SHOTLIST: WASHINGTON, US (SEPT. 30, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ONE OF REPORTERS ASKING: “Are you preparing to take strikes against drug gangs in Venezuela?” (SOUNDBITE) (English) US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP RESPONDING: “We'll see what happens with Venezuela. Venezuela's been very dangerous with drugs and with other things. And they've been very very dangerous, so we'll see what happens with Venezuela. We had a lot of drugs coming in through water. We had water drugs. It's a simple term. We don't have any boats on the water. There are no boats. There are no fishing boats. There are no anything. So, we hit a number of boats, you probably saw that. And since we did that, we have absolutely no drugs coming in to our country via water. Because it was lethal. And now we'll look at cartels. We're going to look very seriously at cartels coming by land.”WASHINGTON, US - SEPT. 30: US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Sept. 30, that Venezuela remains a major hub for drug trafficking and hinted at possible action against cartels operating in the country. "We're going to look very seriously at cartels coming by land," he said. Trump has dispatched warships and a submarine to the southern Caribbean on counter narcotics missions, and US forces have destroyed at least three suspected Venezuelan drug boats in recent weeks. Last week, the White House announced that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had sent a letter to his US counterpart Donald Trump proposing direct dialogue between the two countries. In the letter, dated Sept. 6, Maduro rejected accusations that his government is linked to “mafia and drug trafficking networks,” calling the claims “completely unfounded” and describing them as “fake news” damaging to bilateral relations. He also denied reports that Venezuela refused to accept the return of deported migrants, calling the accusations false.
