Students Evacuate Visayas State University Dorms After 6.9-Magnitude Cebu Quake
Script:
This footage, filmed by Derek Alviola, shows students evacuating a dormitory at Visayas State University in Baybay City, Leyte, following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off Cebu at 9:59 PM on September 30, 2025. The video captures the nighttime panic as groups gather outdoors amid the strong tremors.
According to USGS, the quake’s epicenter was 17 km from Cebu, with no tsunami risk, though shaking reached Leyte and other parts of Eastern Visayas. Authorities have suspended classes across the region for October 1. Initial reports indicate at least 69 deaths province-wide, widespread power outages, and a declared state of calamity. The Philippines, located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” averages around 20 significant earthquakes annually, according to PHIVOLCS records.
