Welford & Sulby Reservoir. A Landscape of Water and History

Buy video

This is the Welford and Sulby Reservoir, lying between the villages of Welford and Sulby in Northamptonshire. It serves an important role in supplying water to the Welford Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

In the foreground we can see Sulby Reservoir, the original body of water, separated from its companion by the dam. Beyond it lies Welford Reservoir, a later addition built to increase capacity. At the time of filming, the water level is unusually low, the result of this year’s prolonged hot summer.

Over to the right of the image, faint earthworks mark the site of the former medieval village of Sulby, its outlines still visible in the landscape centuries after it was abandoned.

This combination of waterways, farmland, and history makes the area a fascinating intersection of natural beauty and human endeavour.
