Scientists have discovered that the elusive Hairy Marron crayfish displays surprisingly maternal behaviour.

Footage shows a female crustacean swishing her eggs to provide aeration for her offspring inside an enclosure in Perth, Australia.

The striking blue crayfish can also be seen stroking the eggs and flicking away bits of sand to keep them clean.

This trait, rarely observed in crustaceans, had never been documented in the species until now.
