Locals gathered to participate in a colourful Hindu festival across northern India.

The event, known as Vijayadashami - or more commonly Dussehra - is a major Hindu celebration symbolising the triumph of good over evil. It marks the end of the nine-day Navratri festival and is observed in various forms throughout the country.

Footage shows devotees visiting elaborately decorated temporary structures, known as pandals, housing idols of the goddess Durga and her divine companions in Bodhgaya on October 2.

In the capital, Delhi, heavy rains disrupted traditional ceremonies, forcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel his scheduled appearance at a key event.

Tragedy struck in Madhya Pradesh, where 11 people, including two children, lost their lives during separate Durga idol immersion processions.

At least nine worshippers were killed when a tractor-trolley carrying idols veered off the road and fell into a lake in the Pandhana area of Khandwa district.

In Ujjain, two children aged between 8 and 16 died, and one boy was reported missing after a similar vehicle carrying 12 people and a Durga idol plunged into the Chambal River near Narasingha village.

As part of the Dussehra tradition, Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad effigies were set on fire. The three are villains from the ancient Indian epic Ramayana.

Ravana, the ten-headed demon king, along with his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad, are burned in effigy to symbolise the victory of Lord Rama and the triumph of good over evil.

Dussehra is widely celebrated across India with rituals, performances, and public gatherings, bringing communities together in a shared message of hope, renewal, and spiritual victory.
