Philippines: Survivors recall terrifying moments of Philippines' earthquake
Storyline: Two survivors who escaped Tuesday's magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the central Philippines have recounted the harrowing moments when the tremors tore through the region. The quake, which occurred at 21:59 local time, struck at a depth of 10 km, approximately 17 km northeast of Bogo City, according to a report by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). "It was really sudden. I was about to go to sleep in my bedroom, then suddenly the whole ground shook, the whole house shook, and it really made me feel like I was so scared and afraid. The whole thing was a very scary experience since it was the first time we experienced such a high magnitude (earthquake). It was from 5.0 magnitude to 6.9, I believe," said Kate Ariane, a local resident. "There were some instances of aftershocks, felt everywhere. In my heart, I also felt scared for my family because I was away from home and my mother, my eldest daughter and my niece are all girls. When I finally came home, I found them safe and also secure. Our house is slightly damaged. It has cracks on our walls, some things are broken and scattered. But the more important thing is our health," said Christian, another resident. The Phivolcs had recorded 3,952 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 1 to 5, as of 08:00 on Friday. The number of deaths in the earthquake has been lowered to 68 from 72 as the number of injured people rose to 559, according to the latest data released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday. The NDRRMC stated that the shallow, offshore earthquake that struck Cebu Province, with its epicenter in Bogo City, has also affected 80,595 families, or 366,360 people. The Philippine government announced on Thursday the official termination of search, rescue, and retrieval operations in the areas hardest hit by the powerful earthquake. In Bogo City, residents are gradually returning to daily routines. Many small businesses and eateries have reopened, and with electricity supply gradually being restored, life in the city is beginning to normalize. Authorities continue efforts to aid recovery and ensure safety as the community rebuilds from the shock. Shotlist: Cebu Province, Philippines - Oct 1, 2025: 1.
