A fire at a Chevron refinery sent towering flames into the sky near Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Locals reported hearing a loud explosion before spotting a huge blaze at the El Segundo refinery around 9:30 pm local time on October 2.

Footage shows flames shooting into the air, with thick smoke billowing across the sky, tinted orange by the fire.

Authorities said there was no immediate threat to public security, and no evacuations were ordered.

El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel told local media that all personnel were accounted for, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

During the incident, onshore winds from the west-southwest near Los Angeles International Airport blew between 10 and 15 mph, pushing smoke eastward. Airport flights were not disrupted.

Built in 1911, the El Segundo refinery is the largest oil-processing facility on the US West Coast and can process up to 276,000 barrels of crude oil daily, the company said.
