Escalator pile-up causes panic as crowds flock to religious festival in Thailand
Footage shows an escalator pile-up as crowds visited a temple for a religious festival in Thailand.
Devotees converged on the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple for the annual Hindu celebration of the Navaratri festival in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 2.
But congestion on the walkway leading to the BTS Sky Train caused a bottleneck at the top. Dozens of visitors were trapped, and several fell down before the emergency stop button was pushed.
Onlooker Aom said: 'I recorded the video on October 2 at 10:41 pm during the Navaratri festival at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in the Silom area.
'The streets were extremely crowded, and officials blocked access to Surasak BTS Station, likely because it had reached capacity.
'As a result, people could not move forward and were forced to walk back down against the escalator flow, which led to an accident.'
The annual Vijaya Dasami 2025 parade began at around 7:30 p.m., with the procession moving out from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, also known as Wat Khaek, on Silom Road.
